Dear Friend,

If you are reading this, it probably means you have just arrived at the Human & Co refuge. I remember how it felt when I first came here with my four children. I was scared, exhausted, and unsure what the future would look like.

My name is Jennifer*. When we arrived, we had just escaped domestic and family violence. I was also facing another challenge. Because of my visa status at the time, I did not have access to many of the supports that other people rely on. I often felt invisible and did not know how I was going to rebuild a safe life for my children.

The team at the refuge and the ROAR program stood beside me during that time. They helped me connect with immigration support and guided me through the complicated process of applying for citizenship. Having a safe place to stay gave me the space to breathe and start thinking about a new future.

Slowly, things began to change. With their encouragement, I applied for work and was able to secure a full-time job. Not long after, I was promoted. I also became an Australian citizen, which was a moment I will never forget.

Today, my children and I are preparing to move into transitional housing. The kids are excited about having their own space and making new friends. For the first time in a long time, we are able to plan for the future.
If you are just arriving here, I want you to know that you are not alone. The staff here truly care and will support you step by step while you find your way forward.

Take care,

Jennifer
