Dear Friend,

If you are reading this, you may have just connected with the team Human & Co. I remember how it felt when I first reached out. I was scared, overwhelmed, and unsure if things could ever feel normal again.

My name is Anna*. When I was referred to the service in late 2024, I had recently been assaulted by my former partner. I was living with the effects of what had happened every day. I had flashbacks, panic attacks, nightmares, and a constant feeling of fear. Even though there was an ADVO in place, I still felt shaken and disconnected from myself and the world around me.

The workers supported me in those early days by simply helping me feel safe again. I attended counselling where I could talk openly without being judged. They helped me understand how trauma affects the body and mind, and gave me practical ways to cope when things felt overwhelming. Little by little, I began to feel more grounded and started to rebuild some confidence in myself.

When the court date approached, the team supported me through that too. I was very anxious about giving evidence, but they helped me prepare and reminded me that I was not alone. The outcome was a guilty verdict for the assault. Hearing that decision brought a sense of relief and justice. With continued support, I was able to move into safe and stable housing and received financial support through Victims Services. Over time, I completed fifteen counselling sessions and noticed a big change in how I was feeling. The flashbacks and anxiety became less intense, and I started reconnecting with friends and doing things I enjoyed again.

One of the biggest changes in my life is that I have now enrolled in a Diploma of Community Services. I want to use my experience to help other women who have been through domestic violence and remind them that things can get better.

If you are starting your journey here, I want you to know that healing takes time, but you do not have to do it alone. The team here are kind, patient, and will walk beside you every step of the way. Take care of yourself.

With understanding,

Anna
